The Descendants of

Philip Groves & Anna Smith

Philip Groves was born around 1615 in Babbury, Oxfordshire, England and married Anna Smith. He was a shoemaker. He made his way to New England early enough to become one of the founders of Stratford, Connecticut, in 1639. There he became one of the most prominent citizens. He was the first ruling elder of the church in Stratford and the first Deputy for Stratford in the Connecticut Legislature. He was a Deputy for fifteen sessions of the General Court and held other important offices. A sign of the high respect in which he was held is that he was often called on to settle disputes between towns and between individuals.

The family has not been studied in direct detail as Philip Groves & Anna Smith had no male children. However, their descendants intermarried with many of the well-known families of Stratford and provide an interesting cross section of early New England families. Some of the families that have numerous representatives in the Groves genealogy are: Beach, Beardsley, Beers, Booth, Burton, Coe, Curtis, Edwards, Gridley, Hawley, Hinman, Hoyt, Lewis, Nichols, Sherman, Welles, and Wheeler.

This Groves Genealogy traces their descendants for six generations with the vital statistics of generation seven. Female lines are continued along with male lines. Biographical material and detailed source references are given, often to primary records. Along with the text are color photographs of tombstones. Epitaphs are often given when a photograph of the tombstone was not available. There are indexes of people and places. The book is bound in soft-cover and is printed on acid-free paper.
