The Unity Burial Ground

This volume is a record of the Unity Burial Ground. This small graveyard is located in what is today the town of Trumbull, Connecticut. The first burial was that of a seven year old boy, Samuel Bennett, and it took place in 1731. The last burial occurred in 1983, and the graveyard is essentially full.

Several pages of photographs show the layout of the cemetery. The main section of the book contains a page for each person known to be interred in Unity Burial Ground. Photographs of each tombstone are included with the exception of a few that are missing or too eroded to identify.

This cemetery was the burying place for Unity Parish. The area was originally part of the land laid out for the town of Stratford, Connecticut in 1639. It was one of the first of the outlying settlements that was split off from Stratford. Later the adjacent community of Long Hill Parish merged with Unity Parish to form the town of North Stratford. In October 1797 the area was reorganized by the State Legislature as the town of Trumbull.

The present book builds on the record of this cemetery made by the Reverend Samuel Orcutt in his excellent tome on early Stratford. In that book he listed the inscriptions of the tombstones as they existed around 1885. In 1971 a small book entitled They Face the Rising Sun was published by E. Merrill Beach. In it are recorded the inscriptions, a few lines of biographical material, and several photographs in black and white.

All of the inscriptions previously found are included in the current book along with color photographs of the stones that could be identified. There are  additions and corrections to the previous books. When the stones are extremely weathered, the inscriptions are printed to help interpret the text on the stones. In a few cases, the Reverend Orcutt’s inscriptions are the only record left of a burial.

Each person known to be buried here is given a page. On that page his/her name, the inscription on his/her headstone, and a color photograph are given, if available. Additional genealogical and biographical information is provided in many cases. Most of the people are related to early Stratford families and more information can be found in my series of genealogies on those families. In the index women are listed under both their birth surname and married surname.
