The Descendants of

Joseph Bolles Sr. &  His Wife Mary

Joseph Bolles Sr. was born in 1608 in England. He and his wife Mary raised a family in Maine. They settled in Wells, Maine, where he was Town Clerk from 1654 to 1664.  One son, Samuel, after being burned out three times by Indians removed to Massachusetts. His brother Thomas was encouraged by Governor John Winthrop to move to New London, Connecticut. This genealogy traces the descendants of these two men.

Both men had three children. However, the Connecticut branch was nearly wiped out in 1678 when a vagrant youth murdered Thomas’ wife and two of his children. Only the infant son John survived. John married twice and fourteen children, so the line prospered.

A genealogy of the Bolles family was published in 1865 by a descendant John A. Bolles. It was well done. Our new genealogy adds to that one, especially along the female lines, and corrects some minor errors.  Detailed source references are given, often to primary records. There are indexes of people and places. The book is bound in soft-cover and is printed on acid-free paper.

Research is underway to extend this genealogy to the present.
