The Descendants of
John Wickwire Sr. & Mary Tonge
John Wickwire Sr. was born in England and became one of the early settlers of New London, Connecticut. His wife, Mary Tonge, daughter of George Tonge, was born in New London. John participated in the Great Swamp fight of 1675 and received land for his service. John was well-educated and successful. John and Mary had eight children, who lived in the area and married into other early New London families, e.g., Baker, Brown, Chappell, Hambleton, Haughton, Hurlbut, Lewis, and Swaddle. A number of the descendants settled in the North Parish of New London, which later became Montville The genealogy of this family is complicated by the variations in spelling of the surname. These include Wickwire, Wickware, and Wickweare. A genealogy of the Wickwire family was published in 1909. This genealogy is an comprehensive revision and extension of that book. Corrections based on new research are made. Detailed source references are given, often to primary records. This genealogy covers the eleven generations of the family. In addition, the female lines are followed and extensive biographical material is added. Research is underway to extend this genealogy forward to the present. There are more than 3,000 descendants shown. Portraits and color photographs of tombstones are included. The book is indexed by people and places. It is bound in soft-cover and is printed on acid-free paper.
